dated May 2, 1957 : Council for Eastern Zone

Inaugurating the first meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council in Calcutta on April 30, the Union Home Minister, Pandit G.B. Pant, called on the members not to lay stress on claims and counter-claims in respect of the border areas or controversies and differences of a passing phase. The real bonds of common interest constituted the one factor that had linked the people of this region throughout the vicissitudes of history. He told the Council that, being advisory in character, its functions should be so worked that its decisions carried moral sanction. He appealed to the members to conduct the discussions in a businesslike manner, animated by a spirit of accommodation with a wider outlook and patriotic approach, which would ensure inter-State co-operation between Bihar, Bengal, Assam and Orissa.
