World Cup tells upon summer camp

Staff Reporter

It sees a turnout of only 130 boys

VIJAYAWADA: Team India's early exit from the World Cup seems to have had a negative impact on the annual summer cricket coaching camp organised by the Krishna District Cricket Association, which began at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium on Tuesday.

The camp, which was inaugurated by Commissioner of Police C.V. Anand, saw the turnout of only 130 boys, as compared to 350 youngsters at last year's camp. But the day marked a new beginning for women cricketers, as they took part in the camp for the first time after merger of women's cricket with the BCCI.

Around 10 women players, including two from Machilipatnam, were present at the camp supervised by former Ranji player Ch. Sankar.

Mr. Anand emphasised the importance of identifying talent without bias. "There is a lot of cricketing talent available in the country and the need of the hour is to identify and nurture it without prejudice," he said.

Mr. Anand advised the girls to practise hard as the women's cricket looked more promising after merger with the BCCI. "The captain of the Indian women's cricket team, Mithali Raj, is from Andhra Pradesh. Give your hundred per cent and learn the intricacies of the game in a planned manner," he exhorted the girls. Mr. Anand, along with KDCA officials Gokaraju Gangaraju, Ch. Arun Kumar and K. Pattabhiramaiah, presented a kit to the girls' team. KDCA secretary Koka Ramesh said camps would be held for boys and girls of less than 10 years of age at IGMC stadium, while others would practise at Siddhartha Medical College grounds.

"As many as 15 coaches will impart techniques to boys during the month-long camp. The association will serve a glass of milk and biscuits for the wards and supply balls at practice sessions," he added.
