Works on Polavaram will resume soon, says official

B.V.S. Bhaskar

Rajahmundry: Works on the Polavaram (Indira Sagar) project will resume during this week, according to Chief Engineer Venkateswara Rao.

Taken up as part of the `Jala Yagnam', the works were stopped on May 4, 2006, following a directive of the Central Empowered Committee of the Supreme Court asking the government to obtain forest and other clearances from the ministries concerned at the Central level.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, too, said during the `Praja Patham' programme in East Godavari recently that the works on the project would commence in a day or two.

The works were stopped on the 174-km Right Main Canal between Tadipudi and Vijayawada that was designed to carry 80 tmc water.

"As there are no forests in this area, we can resume the works as per the direction of the State Government," Mr. Venkateswara Rao said.

There were seven packages in the canal. Officials were trying to call back the contractors who had pulled off their men and machinery from the site.
