New commander for IAF station

CHANGE OF GUARD: Air Commodore T.K. Varma, who took over as Air Officer Commanding, IAF Station, Tambaram, with his predecessor Air Commodore M.S. Ahluwalia, on Monday.

TAMBARAM: In his farewell address after a 28-month tenure as Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Tambaram Station, Air Commodore M.S. Ahluwalia on Monday said the base had established itself as the hub of training for Airmen.

Shortly before handing over charge to Air Commodore T.K. Varma, he said a lot of changes had taken place in the last two years in the pattern of training. From All Through Trade Training, the training pattern moved on to Just in Time Training and at present, it was fine tuned to Modular Pattern to ensure that the potentials of the recruits were fully tapped.

While implementing the new pattern, there was a tremendous increase in the workload of instructors, who shouldered the tasks in a time-bound manner; and Air Headquarters had acknowledged it, Air Cdre Ahluwalia said.

He said he took over in November 2004, a month before the tsunami hit India. The Indian Air Force base in Car Nicobar was devastated, but the Tambaram IAF station rose to the occasion mounting relief operations. One of the key achievements of the Tambaram station was its flight safety record.

Flying instructors logged 10,000 hours every year and have maintained an accident record for the past three years.

Other achievements include `best training establishment in IAF, `best flying training establishment of Training Command' and best in flight safety and maintenance, Air Cdre Ahluwalia said. He will now join the Army Training Command in Shimla, which has officers from the three defence services.

Air Cdre T.K. Varma, who was earlier with the Integrated Defence Staff in New Delhi, takes over from him. Air Cdre Ahluwalia reviewed a parade by officers and airmen of various ranks.
