Japanese team discusses cooperation in transport

NEW DELHI: A Japanese delegation led by the Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Tetsuzo Fuyushiba, urged the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to relax the norms and formalities to ensure a hassle free visa regime for Japanese visitors wanting to visit India.

Mr. Fuyushiba, who met Dr. Singh on Monday, said he had taken up the matter of relaxed visa regime with Dr. Singh who had assured him that he would put in his best efforts to ensure that visa rules were simplified for those who want to visit India. The issue of Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) also came up for discussion with Dr. Singh stating that it was another symbol of bond between India and Japan and desired that the Japanese Government should provide further aid to the project. Both Dr. Singh and Mr. Fuyushiba discussed cooperation in the areas of transport, travel and to further strengthen cooperation in various other fields.

Freight corridor

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday on the outcome of his visit, Mr. Fuyushiba said he had met the Union Minister for Railways, Lalu Prasad, and discussed the issue of dedicated corridor. Mr. Fuyushiba said he had assured Mr. Prasad full cooperation for completing the feasibility study for the dedicated freight corridor by October.

Mr. Fuyusibha said he had also met the Union Tourism Minister, Ambica Soni, and the Union Urban Development Minister, Jaipal Reddy, and discussed the possibility of cooperation in various areas.

India and Japan also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up Indo-Japan Joint Working Group on urban development. The first meeting of the working group is scheduled in June in Tokyo.
