Full year exports touch $125 b

Crude oil imports up 30 p.c. at $57 b

NEW DELHI: The cumulative value of exports rose by 23.88 per cent to $124.6 billion (Rs. 5,63,800 crore) in 2006-07 from $100.6 billon in the previous fiscal.

However, the cumulative value of imports grew at a much faster pace by 25 per cent to $181.3 billion (Rs. 8,20,568 crore) from $140.2 billion, according to provisional data for merchandise released by the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics.

Crude oil imports were higher by 30 per cent at $57 billion during the year against $44 billion in the previous fiscal.

Non-oil imports were valued at $124 billion, which were 25 per cent higher than the level of such imports valued at $99.4 billion.

The trade deficit was estimated at $56.7 billion, which was higher than the deficit of $39.6 billion in 2005-06.

In March, exports were valued at $12.5 billion (Rs. 55,400 crore) compared with $10.9 billion in the same month last year.

Imports stood at $16.3 billion (Rs. 72,127 crore) compared with $13.8 billion in March 2006. Crude oil worth $4.6 billion was imported as against $4.2 billion in the same month last year.

Non-oil imports were estimated at $11.8 billion, which were 16.5 per cent higher than $10 billion recorded in the same month last year.
