Blasts rock Dhaka, two other cities

Haroon Habib

DHAKA: Several crude bombs exploded almost simultaneously at railway stations in Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong in Bangladesh on Monday.

Police and eyewitnesses said the bombs exploded between 6:45 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., but they were not obviously meant to kill.

The blasts caused huge panic among passengers at the railway stations.

Initial reports said a rickshaw-puller was injured at the Chittagong terminal when he tried to open one of the sacks containing bombs.

An aluminium plate inscribed with militant slogans purported to be from Zadid Al-Qaeda Bangladesh, an Al-Qaeda network, was found at one of the bombing sites.

The message inscribed on it said all persons employed in NGO organisations must quit their jobs by May 10 and all Ahmadiayas must recognise Prophet Muhammad or face death. The metal sheet also reads, "we are ready to die".

On August 17, 2005, the banned Jama'tul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) launched coordinated bomb attacks in the country's 63 district headquarters to press for establishment of Islamic laws in the country.

Six JMB kingpins were hanged last month.
