Problems of labour class the focus on May Day

Staff Correspondent

Bidar: Various organisations observed May Day here on Tuesday. Members of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions and Communist Party of India organised separate rallies and public functions.

MLA G.V. Sriram Reddy criticised the Government for "failing" to protect the interests of the deprived classes. It had not been able to create employment opportunities for the poor and to curb violence against them, he said.

`Anti-people'

"This is an anti-people government. Politicians who get elected on the poor man's vote are serving the rich. The Government, politicians, and private companies have come together to exploit the common man," Mr. Reddy said.

He criticised the Government for not taking steps to prevent suicide by farmers and for not keeping rise in prices of commodities under check.

Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane president K. Neela said that only a relentless struggle by the working class would lead to liberation. The Government was following anti-labour policies and engaged in indiscriminate privatisation, she said.

Resourceperson Meenakshi Bali highlighted the problems of women labourers.

She called upon labour unions to instil a sense of unity among their cadres and fight for the rights of women labourers.

In another function, CPI district secretary Baburao Honna urged the working classes to unite. He alleged that Agricultural Marketing Minister Bandeppa Kashempur had failed to protect the interests of farmers.

Mr. Homa demanded that all eligible labourers be given jobs under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

He urged the Union Government to pass a law to protect those working in the unorganised sector. The Government should introduce land reforms and distribute land to the landless, and also waive all farm loans.

Sangshetty Patil spoke on the significance of May Day.
