Waske upsets Stepanek

MUNICH: German wild-card Alexander Waske upset sixth-seeded Radek Stepanek 7-6(3), 6-3 in the first round of the BMW Open on Tuesday.

Waske, a big-serving doubles specialist, had 11 aces to earn his first singles win this year.

Also, fifth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen had a break of serve in each set to defeat Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 6-4.

Andreev exits

Novak Djokovic drew a chorus of football-inspired jeers as he donned the crimson stripe of Portuguese powerhouse Benfica after scraping to a laboured 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(5) opening victory over Igor Andreev on Monday at the Estoril Open tennis tournament.

Ventura moves up

The winner will next face Spain's Santiago Ventura, who defeated Argentine Sergio Roitman 7-5, 6-2 on a day of wind and changing conditions.
