NEW DELHI: The country's first Woman Grandmaster, S. Vijayalakshmi, gained her final Grandmaster norm on way to winning the Cutro Open chess tournament in Cutro, Italy, on Tuesday. In the 22-player event, Vijayalakshmi scored 6.5 points from nine rounds and emerged victorious by half a point. Vijayalakshmi's earlier GM norms came in the Paris Open (July 2005) and in the Kavala International Open (Greece, Aug. 2006). Vijayalakshmi's victims among the GMs were Igor Naumkin (Russia, 2497), Sergie Krivoshey (Ukraine, 2475), Evgenij Agrest (Sweden, 2561) and Stefan Djuric (Serbia, 2460). She drew with GM Milan Drasko (Montenegro, 2543), GM Dragisa Blagojevic (Montenegro, 2529) and IM Mathias Roeder (Germany, 2453). Her lone loss came against German GM Arkadij Rotstein (2537), who finished third after being tied for the second spot with Drasko at six points. To become a GM, Vijayalakshmi has to raise her rating from the present 2425 to 2500. From this event, she stands to gain around 25 rating points.
