Corrections and Clarifications

* It is the Chitradurga Schist Belt and not the Chitradurga Cyst Belt. A report "An ideal terrain for geologists" (Karnataka, April 27, 2007, page 10) — on a 450-km long and 15-km wide belt, which runs from Mysore to Gadag district and that has reserves of almost every mineral available in the world — had this name incorrect in the strapline and the text. In geology, the term "schist" refers to a metamorphic rock that comes in almost infinite variety. Schists are commonly described in terms of their predominant minerals. Schist comes from the ancient Greek for "split".

* Referring to a report "Polavaram project in two years: YSR" (April 30, 2007), a reader says that the contraction of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme was given as NGRES in all three instances. It should have been NREGS. (The NREGS, under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), was launched on February 2, 2006.)

* In "The war of ideas: mindsets and options" (Editorial page, May 1, 2007), a sentence was: "In an essay on Islamophobia in the United Kingdom in the wake of 7/11, Rosemary Hollis of Chatham House pointed out that Prime Minister Tony Blair's intention was to `head-off any possibility of a debate between the government and the citizenry over UK policy towards the Muslim world in general and Iraq in particular ... .'" The author Hamid Ansari clarifies that it was a typographical error and should have been 7/7 (July 7, 2005).
