Five killed in accident

DINDIGUL: Five persons were killed, and two others injured, when a car on its way from Kumarapalayam to Theni collided with a lorry on the Thadikombu main road at the Poodhipuram pass here on Monday night.

The deceased were identified as Mani (car driver), Murugan, Jaya, Pavithra and Roshini of Krishnanpatti at Thevaram in Theni district. The injured — Leelavathi and Selvam — were admitted to Dindigul Government Hospital. They were returning home after attending a family function. — Staff Reporter

Jayalalithaa appeal to Vandayar

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Tuesday appealed to G.M. Sridhar Vandayar, leader of Moovender Munnetra Kazhagam, to give up his fast.

Noting that Mr. Vandayar was undertaking a fast at Tiruchi Central Jail, Ms. Jayalalithaa said that he should withdraw his agitation considering the unity of the Opposition and the interest of his party members.— Special Correspondent

Mudumalai sanctuary reopened

Udhagamandalam: The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park near here was reopened on Tuesday. Wildlife Warden Rakesh Kumar Dogra said elephant and van rides had resumed.

The sanctuary was closed on March 1 owing to a prolonged dry spell. Mr. Dogra said the recent showers had improved the situation. There was sufficient water in the Moyar river and some of the percolation ponds.

Mr. Dogra said till the end of the season, tourist flow was expected to be heavy. Advance booking counters had been opened at Mudumalai and the wildlife office here. — Special Correspondent

TNAU student receives award

COIMBATORE: K. Vanitha, a postgraduate student of the Department of Crop Physiology of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, has received the $2,500 International Plant Nutrition Institute Scholar Award 2007 to prepare a thesis on drip fertigation studies in aerobic rice.

A university release on Monday stated that the research, aimed at raising the yield plateau of aerobic rice grown under drip fertigation system, would result in considerable saving of water, besides maximising efficiency of applied inputs through integrated nutrient management approach.

It would also promote scientific management of plant nutrients. Staff Reporter

MMK activists defy police orders

CHIDAMBARAM: The police used batons to chase away activists and sympathisers of the Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam (MMK) who gathered at the Gandhi statue here on Tuesday, defying police orders, to protest against the arrest of party leader G.M. Sridhar Vandayar. The police arrested 78 persons.

Assistant Superintendent of Police K.A. Senthilvelan told The Hindu that only on Monday night, some of the party functionaries had approached him, seeking permission for Tuesday's demonstration. As it was May Day, many outfits were to take out rallies. Moreover, as per law, the permission should be sought 48 hours prior to the event. Hence, the request was turned down. — Special Correspondent

Army soldier killed in accident

TIRUNELVELI: An army soldier fell down from the palmyrah tree on Tuesday and died on the spot.

Police said S. Lakshmanan (28) of Chembur under Aayikudi police station had come to his native place during the vacation. When he climbed up the palmyrah tree to cut tender palm fruits this morning, he fell down and died on the spot.

Blood donation camp

TIRUNELVELI: The Tirunelveli Telecom District of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited organised eye camp and blood donation camp as part of the May Day celebrations.

A team of doctors from Aravid Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli, comprising Dr. Hao Xiaojun, Dr. S. Vijayan and K. Venkatachalam, screened more than 250 BSNL employees and their family members.

A total of 20 BSNL employees donated blood on the occasion and a team from Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, led by Dr. Manimala, collected the blood. The General Manager, BSNL, Tirunelveli Telecom District, V. Raju, inaugurated the camps.

Woman ends life

TIRUNELVELI: A woman allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday by consuming poison.

The police said B. Meena (22), who was married to Balasubramanian of Pettai two years ago, consumed poison reportedly due to a domestic quarrel. She was rushed to the hospital but died on the way.

House burgled

TIRUNELVELI: Unidentified burglars looted cash and valuables from the house of a moneylender at Thaazhaiyuththu near here on Tuesday.

The police said D. Chelladurai (35) of Thaazhaiyuththu had gone to his native place Pallikottai near Maanur with his family. When he returned home on Tuesday, he found that the burglars had stolen Rs. 1.80 lakh in cash and jewels worth Rs. 1.50 lakh.

Commits suicide

Nagercoil: A person committed suicide by hanging himself with in his house on Tuesday.

The police said Kannan (22) of Parvathipuram took this extreme step as his parents objected his love affair.

The police have registered a case and are further investigating.

Cadre of banned outfit ends life

ARIYALUR: A. Baskar (30), former member of the banned Tamizhar Viduthalai Iyakkam allegedly committed suicide at his residence in Zamin Kulathur near Andimadam on Monday. Police said Baskar allegedly took some pesticide. He was rushed to the Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital where he died later. The Andimadam police have registered a case and are investigating.

Holiday for Passport Office today

TIRUCHI: The Passport Office here will remain closed on Wednesday (May 2) on account of Buddha Purnima. Applicants willing to submit their applications could do so at the District Passport Cells or at the nearest Speed Post counters, a press release from the Passport Officer, K.S. Daulath Thameem, issued here on Tuesday said. Applications submitted at the Passport Office before March 10, 2007, in which reports were received from police authorities have been processed and passports dispatched. Those who submitted applications before February 2, but did not get their passports, could contact the Passport Office in person or over phone numbers 0431-2707203 /2707404/ 2708225/ 2707011 or by email at rpotry@sify.com / rpo.trichy@mea.gov.in. The applicants could also fax their grievances to 0431-2707515.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 75.79 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 1,217 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 974 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

ERODE: Indian National Trade Union Congress on Tuesday celebrated May Day.

At the union office at Surampatti Naal Road, K. Shanmugam, advisor from Coimbatore, hoisted the flag in the presence of district council executive president C. Shanmugam, says a release. Members of the congress also spoke about the negative fallouts of globalisation and rising unemployment problem.

ERODE: Thirty-nine sub-inspectors in the district have been transferred. According to police officers, the transfers are routine and that they have just followed the norm of changing officers who have served more than two years in a station.

Flash strike

METTUR: Doctors and paramedical personnel of Mettur Government District Headquarters Hospital went on flash strike on Monday protesting against a few persons who reportedly assaulted a woman paramedic.

Official sources said that residents of P.N. Patti town panchayat brought a patient for treatment to the hospital on Sunday. It was said that a few of the residents pick a quarrel with the hospital personnel alleging that they had not attended the patient immediately. One of the residents reportedly assaulted paramedic Kalaiselvi. Following this, doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff went on flash strike. Senior police personnel rushed to the hospital and pacified them. They returned to work after an hour of strike.

10 injured in accident

ATTUR: Ten persons sustained injuries when a goods autorickshaw, in which they were travelling, overturned at Vada Chennimalai near here on Monday.

Police said the vehicle carrying 16 persons, all residents of Kallakurichi, was proceeding to Sadasivapuram when the accident took place. The injured were admitted to Attur Government Hospital. - Staff Reporter

Jewellery stolen

SALEM: A few unidentified persons had stolen five sovereigns of jewellery, cash and valuables from a house at Kitchipalayam on Sunday night. Police said that Chandrasekar (42), owner of a workshop, found the doors of his house broke open and cash and valuables missing.

Residents block road

SALEM: Residents of Poimankaradu blocked the traffic on Salem - Namakkal main road near Mallur on Monday in protest against the driver of a private bus for rash driving. Police said that Selvamani (20) of the village sustained injuries when a car hit his bicycle. Residents in the village sent him to Salem Government Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, a private bus ran over the bicycle lying on the road. Annoyed, residents resorted to a road blockade demanding the officials to take action against the bus driver for rash driving.

A few persons pelted stones and damaged the windscreens of another bus and a lorry. Senior police officials pacified the agitators. - Staff Reporter

TNCC appoints observers

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee on Tuesday announced the appointment of district-wise observers to assess the party's strength all over the State.

In a statement, M. Krishnasswamy, TNCC president, said the observers would study the functioning of Central Government schemes and ascertain the chances of the organisation in the proposed elections to co-operative bodies.

Demand for park

CHENNAI : Mayor M. Subramanian inspected the vacant land belonging to the Tamil Nadu Housing Board located between 11th Cross Street and 12th Cross Street in Indira Nagar following appeal from the residents of the area to develop a park there. He directed the Chennai Corporation officials to take necessary action in this regard. The Mayor also ordered removal of garbage from the land.

Air Force celebration

The Air Force Station, Avadi, celebrated the platinum jubilee of the Indian Air Force and the unit anniversary of the Mechanical Transport Training Institute on Saturday. Officials from the Army, Central Reserve Police Force, State Bank of India, Tata Motors, Hyundai and others participated in the celebration that was held at the Officers' Mess. A movie about the Indian Air Force and the activities of the force was screened.

Cancer screening camp

V.S. Hospital in Chetpet will offer free screening camp for cancer from May 2 to 30. The camp will be conducted between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on all weekdays at the hospital (Ph: 28191020/ 42638586).
