Bandh in villages in Nipani constituency

Belgaum: People in 43 villages of Nipani Assembly constituency in Chikkodi taluk observed a near total bandh on Tuesday opposing its merger with Chikkodi and Sadalga Assembly constituencies.

New head for Bidar Air Force Base

Bidar: Air Commodore Ramesh Rai took over as head of the Bidar Air Force Base on Tuesday.

He replaces Air Commodore J.S. Dhillon who served as Air Officer Commanding of the base for nearly two years.

Air Commodore Rai was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in 1976. He is a qualified flying instructor. He has served at Defence Attaché at the Embassy of India in Israel. He is an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College. — Staff Correspondent

Applications invited for new ITIs

Bangalore: The Director of Employment and Training has invited applications to open industrial training institutes and start new trades/units in existing industrial training institutes in the State.

The last date for submission of applications is May 17 and May 31 with a fine of Rs. 100. Applications should be addressed to the Director of Employment and Training, No. 9/1, Sri Prashanth Complex, P. Kalinga Rao Road, Bangalore 560 027. Details can be obtained on the website www.dget.nic.in.

BHEL employees honoured

Bangalore: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh honoured five employees of the Electroporcelains Division of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. with Shram Shri awards in New Delhi recently. A press release said G. Murugan, T. Ramachandra, H. Chandrashekar, H. Mylarappa and K. Rajendran were honoured with the awards, which included Rs. 40,000 in cash and a `sanad'. — Staff Reporter

Haj conference to be held on May 11

GULBARGA: The All-India Haj Conference (2007) will be held in New Delhi on May 11, Haj Committee chairman Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi, MP, said here on Tuesday.

Mr. Saradgi said External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee would inaugurate the conference. Senior Ministers concerned with arrangements for the Haj programme, including Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed, the Saudi Arabian Ambassador in India and the Indian Ambassador in Saudi Arabia would attend.

The conference will also be attended by Ministers for Haj from various States and chairmen of the State Haj Committees. — Special Correspondent

Mirza Wasim Ahmad Sahib mourned

BANGALORE: The Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Karnataka, has mourned the death of Hazrath Mirza Wasim Ahmad Sahib, head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in India, who passed away in Amritsar on Sunday. A press release from the Mission said, "He worked for the uplift of the poor and lesser privileged and for the cause of peace, unity and harmony among the followers of various faiths." — Staff Reporter

Yoga education

Summer camp

MYSORE: JSS Mahavidyapeetha will conduct a summer camp for children from Wednesday (May 2) to May 16 at JSS Mysore Urban Haath complex located in Hebbal Industrial Area. The participants will be imparted training in fine arts, theatre, dance, devotional song, greeting card making, information on various aspects of science, technology and environment and computer science. Irregularity alleged in counselling

BANGALORE: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has asked the State Government to take up the case of eligible Master of Dental Sciences aspirants left out in the counselling process conducted by the Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minorities Private Colleges' Association on April 15. ABVP's south zone organising secretary Rayachandra Ravikumar alleged that the association did not hold counselling for 45 seats in a transparent and as per the norms prescribed by the Supreme Court. He said seats had been given to candidates from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pardesh and Maharashtra. Mr. Ravikumar told presspersons on Monday the process was stayed by the one-man regulatory commission headed by N.R. Shetty. The Association has approached the High Court questioning the Commission's order.

Engineering college exhibition

BIJAPUR: "Srusti - 2007", a four-day engineering project exhibition will be held in Bagalkot from May 4 in which over 600 engineering students from throughout the State would take part with their project models. Basaveshwara Engineering College, Bagalkot, and Akhil Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad are jointly organising the event on the premises of the college. Bagalkot MLA, Veeranna Charanthimath, who is chairman of the reception committee, said in a statement that students would present scientific papers and innovative projects setting blueprint for stronger India. — Staff Reporter

Water demanded from Karanja dam

Bidar: The former Minister Bheemanna Khandre will lead an agitation in Bidar on May 7 demanding that water from the Karanja dam be diverted to the Mahatma Gandhi Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane. He demanded the State Government to give an incentive of Rs. 10,000 an acre of unsold sugarcane on the lines of the Maharashtra Government. Mr. Khandre, who heads the Akhila Bharatiya Veerashaiva Mahasabha, said the sabha supported the idea that President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam should be continued for the second term. — Staff Correspondent

BSNL to appoint agents

Belgaum: The BSNL will appoint Direct Selling Agents (DSA) to provide telecom services to customers in Belgaum Telecom District. Interested and PCO franchisees may submit their applications to Sub-Divisional Engineer, Marketing, on or before Sunday. The applications can be had from the SDE Office. The applications should be submitted along with a bank demand draft drawn in favour A.O. (Accounts Officer), Cash, BSNL, Belgaum. The demand draft is not applicable for STD PT owners. The minimum qualification to avail the agency is a pass in the SSLC examination, according to a press release here on Monday. — Staff Correspondent

Man dies in accident

HUBLI: A man died in an accident involving an oil tanker and a jeep at Varur near Hubli on Monday night. Three persons were injured. The police gave the name of the victim as Arunkumar of Akki Alur in Haveri district. He was supposed to get married on May 13. The accident occurred when he was on his way to distribute wedding invitation cards. The injured were being treated at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospital here, the police said.

Programme discontinued

HUBLI: The capacity building programme for the Citizens' Committee of Hubli North and Dharwad divisions will not be held from Wednesday, the Revenue Officer of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation has said in a press release.
