Coimbatore: V.A.V. Rajesh of Andhra Pradesh and R. Aswath of Chennai, with seven points from eight rounds, emerged joint leaders in the LA Group Fide-rated open chess tournament at the Jenney Club here on Tuesday.

Early in the day, overnight leader Rajesh, a former Asian under-11 champion, suffered a shock seventh round defeat at the hands of former Tamil Nadu State champion Ram S. Krishnan of BSNL. He, however, bounced back to oust S. Nitin of Salem with the black pieces in the eighth.
