Metro joins hands with NCC

Staff Reporter

A new joint campaign to guide commuters at Capital's stations launched

NEW DELHI: After failing to rein in unruly crowds at metro stations, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has now joined hands with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) to guide commuters and "teach them the modalities of correct behaviour".

The DMRC on Tuesday launched a joint campaign wherein NCC cadets would guide commuters at busy Delhi Metro stations and explain "the importance of caring for their co-passengers".

As part of the campaign, nearly 200 NCC cadets will be deployed during peak hours at Metro stations handling a large number of commuters initially for a period of two months.

The programme was launched at the Rajiv Chowk (Connaught Place) metro station by Minister of State for Defence M. M. Pallam Raju.

Metro etiquette

Mr. Raju said that the NCC cadets would encourage commuters to stand in queues and help women, disabled and elderly passengers. They would also distribute handouts on Metro etiquette.

The Minister said the cadets could help make Metro stations very orderly in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Initially the cadets would be deployed at the busy Metro stations of Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Shahdara, Welcome, Inderlok, Pitampura, Rohini (West), Vishwavidyalaya, New Delhi, Karol Bagh, Janak Puri (West), Uttam Nagar (East) and Dwarka Mor.

Over 5 lakh passengers travel on the Delhi Metro network every day at present.

The DMRC has been making efforts to make passengers follow queues and maintain etiquette while boarding the trains and disembarking.

DMRC Managing Director E. Sreedharan had also written an open letter to the people recently urging them to refrain from pushing and jostling at Metro stations. The Corporation had also launched a crowd management initiative in March this year to teach commuters how to maintain the queue system for boarding Metro trains and de-boarding on a trial basis.
