Look after interests of labourers: Speaker

NEW DELHI: Delhi Assembly Speaker Prem Singh on Tuesday advised the Delhi Government and non-government organisations to look after the interests of labourers.

In a statement on International Labour Day, Mr. Singh said the rights of the labourers should be fully protected as they were the pillars of the economy and development of the country depended on them.

New Director of BSNL takes charge

NEW DELHI: Kuldeep Goyal on Tuesday took charge as Director (Planning and New Services) of the public sector Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

An Indian Telecom Service (ITS) officer of 1972 batch, Mr. Goyal was so far Chief General Manager of BSNL's Maharashtra telecom circle. He has also been Executive Director of MTNL-Mumbai besides being on MTNL's Board of Directors.

Caution on trans fatty acids

NEW DELHI: Admitting that food tastes better when cooked in hydrogenated oils containing trans fatty acids than when cooked in plant oils, Heart Care Foundation of India president K. K. Aggarwal has cautioned that intake of even 2.6 gm of fatty acid per day can significantly raise the risk of heart attack.

Stating that French fries, popcorns and food cooked by traditional "halwais" was full of hydrogenated trans fatty acids, Dr. Aggarwal said the recommended intake of trans fatty acids was less than 5 gm. "Per serving 5 gm of trans fatty acids is present in French fries, 6 gm in breaded fish burger, 5 gm in breaded chicken nuggets and 1.1 gm in pizza," he added.

Kashmiri poet remembered

NEW DELHI: The 17th death anniversary of Kashmiri poet and noted freedom fighter Sarwanand Kaul `Premi' was observed here on Tuesday.

Eminent speakers paid glowing tributes to the poet, who enriched Kashmiri language and literature, besides promoting communal amity through his writings.

Temple foundation day celebrated

NEW DELHI: The second foundation day of Sri Sankatahara Ganapathy Temple was held at Vasundhara Enclave here on Monday.

The highlight of the celebrations was a "chandan alankar" to Lord Ganapathy. A number of devotees from Vasundhara Enclave and neighbouring areas of Mayur Vihar and Noida attended the function.
