NILESHWARAM: Wayanad entered the semifinals in the boys' section of the 31st junior State basketball championships at the Raja's HSS courts here on Tuesday. Wayanad, represented by players from St. Joseph's Pullincunoo, defeated Kannur 84-74 after leading 39-36 at the half-time. Ashin Xavier led the scoring for Wayanad with 32 points and he was complimented well by Johny Cherian (27). Jijo Mathew (22) and J.G. Jobin (20) did the bulk of scoring for the loser. In the girls' section, Kollam, Thrissur and Kottayam moved into the semifinals. Defending champion Kottayam thrashed Thiruvananthapuram 31-8 in the quarterfinals. Thrissur beat Kozhikode 32-21, while Kollam crushed Idukki 23-4. The results: Boys: Quarterfinals: Wayanad 84 (Ashin Xavier 32, Johny Cherian 27) bt Kannur (Jijo Mathew 22, J.G. Jobin 20, Aby Sony 16). League: Thrissur 64 (Britto 16, Shan 16) bt Pathanamthittta 42 (Jijo 14, Kashi 13); Thiruvananthapuram 50 (S. Sujith 21, Umesh 12) bt Kozhikode 22. Girls: Quarterfinals: Kottayam 31 (Shija Joseph 13) bt Thiruvananthapuram 8; Thrissur bt Kozhikode 32-21; Kollam bt Idukki 23-4. League: Thiruvananthapuram 58 (Arya 21, Bylon 15) bt Pathanamthitta 27 (Stincy 15); Kottayam 40 (Shija Joseph 18, K.S. Anu 10) bt Wayanad 24 (Athira 12).
