Officer suspended for violation of model code

LUCKNOW: The Chief Development Officer of Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, H. S. Chaturvedi, has been suspended on charges of violating the model code of conduct for the ongoing State Assembly elections.

The suspension order was issued by the Election Commission on Tuesday. A departmental inquiry has been ordered by the Commission.

Additional Chief Electoral Officer Mrityunjay Kumar Narain told newspersons that the officer was suspended following complaints of releasing money to Gram Panchayats after the announcement of the schedule for the State elections on February 21. The model code of conduct had been enforced the same day.

Mr. Narain said an inquiry was conducted by the District Magistrate of Kushinagar.

The Commission has also taken a strong view of misconduct by the Election Observer for Bahraich, Arvind Kumar. Elections in Bahraich were held in the fourth phase on April 23. A Maharashtra cadre IAS officer of 1985 batch, Mr. Kumar was allegedly found drunk and reportedly snatched the carbine of a security personnel after the completion of polling.

Following a complaint to the Commission, an FIR was lodged against the officer in Bahraich on Monday at the behest of the poll panel and he was asked to leave the city.
