Rajiv Gruhakalpa work to resume today

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Builders and contractors, who suspended work on the ongoing Rajiv Gruhakalpa, a week ago, will resume construction on Wednesday, following an assurance on their demands by Housing Minister Botcha Satyanarayana.

The Builders Association of India (BAI) demanded enhancement of the unit cost of the houses meant for urban poor so as to meet the additional expenditure owing to steep rise in cement and steel prices.

After discussing the issues raised by the BAI with its office-bearers on Tuesday, the Minister called on Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy. President of the BAI's State unit S.N. Reddy claimed that the Chief Minister had agreed to pay the difference between the price quoted at the time of estimates and existing market prices of cement and steel.

Pegging steel price

He also said that Dr. Reddy agreed to peg the steel price to the scheme on a par with the one given to projects executed by the Roads and Buildings department. However, the Chief Minister insisted on the builders not to stop work on the prestigious programme.
