PULLUR (VANIYAMBADI): Pattali Makkal Katchi founder Ramadoss on Tuesday said he proposed to form a Palar Protection Force, with volunteers from various political parties and non-government organisations, to democratically protest against the Andhra Pradesh Government's move to construct a dam across the Palar at Ganeshapuram near Kuppam. Talking to reporters after participating in a PMK protest against the Andhra Pradesh move, Dr. Ramadoss said he would mobilise people from five affected areas Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and parts of Chennai to stop the proposed dam construction. Once the dam was constructed, it would deprive Vellore, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamali, Tiruvallur districts and parts of Chennai of water. It would be a blow to agriculturists. The PMK would file a case in the Supreme Court in four to five days.
Parties flayed
Dr. Ramadoss blamed both the DMK and AIADMK governments on the Palar issue. "Indifferent" attitude of the parties had resulted in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh constructing over 50 check dams across the river, the main drinking water source for Vellore district. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Rajasekhara Reddy had said that only 0.6 tmcft water would be utilised to cover 4000 acres. But, the reality was that the water was utilised to cover 17,500 acres. Tamil Nadu Ministers M.K. Stalin and Ponmudi participated in the talks with Andhra Pradesh Government in 2006, Dr. Ramadoss said.
