CHENNAI: Three young musicians were simply enjoying themselves on stage. The outcome over one hour of pleasing music. Abaswaram Ramjhi's band `Jus 3' comprising Madhumita Srinivasan, Nivas Prasanna and Punith Davay, who performed here on Tuesday, took the audience on a `back and forth' musical journey. Oscillating between popular numbers of yesteryears and current hits, the trio managed the vocals, keyboard and percussion all by themselves for a variety of songs. Madhumita and Nivas are singers who can play the keyboard with ease. And to make sure everybody kept tapping their feet, there was Punith's rhythm. Though a light music performance, it began on a classical note (after a prayer), with `Thesulavuthe then malarale ...'.
Interesting contrasts
Madhumita and Nivas gave the challenging piece their best to try and reproduce the effect given by legends Ghantasala and P. Susheela. Considering that they were singing and playing the keyboard simultaneously, it sure would have taken several hours of practice to perform as confidently as they did. Next came `Unakkul naane...' from Pachaikili Muthucharam, as an interesting contrast to the previous high-pitched number. It was again time for a classic penned by Vaali `Naalai inda velai parthu ...'. A series of old and new songs followed, including Illayaraja's beautiful `Sundari kannal oru sedi...' and the more recent `Katrin mozhi...', a Vidya Sagar composition. Hindi film music lovers appreciated their rendition of `Pyar hua ikraar hua hai...'. After a complex interlude on the instruments, Nivas seamlessly glided into a higher pitch, evoking a spontaneous round of applause. Actor Srikanth, with his namesake the senior actor, were chief guests who felicitated the performers.
Surprise performance
A surprise performance by little Pooja and Vignesh (of Ramjhi's Issai Mazhalai) of `Aduthaathu Ambujatha pathela..' was for the senior actor.
