HYDERABAD: The initiative to spread environment related awareness among the student community is expected to be taken up in right earnest from this academic year with the release of a book on environment education activity. The Andhra Pradesh National Green Corps (APNGC) has come out with the material meant for Class VIII and is being despatched to all the deputy education officers across the State. A total of 1.60 lakh books, each costing Rs.11.55, are being sent to the educational institutions free of cost. "Schools, including CBSE, ICSE, Kendriya Vidyalaya and Navodaya Vidyalayas, are being covered under the project and each of them will get 10 books," said APNGC Director W.G. Prasanna Kumar. All the 10,000 High Schools, including 6,000 of them imparting education in English medium, are in the process of receiving the material.
Chapters
While one lakh books titled `Sadhana - NGC Green File' have been printed in English, the rest come in Telugu. For Class VIII, two periods a week are to be devoted for environment education which will be in the form of activity from these books covering the chapters on Balance in nature, Impact of population on environment, Harnessing resources and Environmental pollution - cause & effect. Related issues such as tackling the menace of plastic bags, increasing mileage of vehicles, public sanitation to health at home and soil erosion are addressed in the 60-page publication. Through activities, individual and group, games and presentation during the class, the students will be made aware on issues that matter for environment conservation, says Mr. Prasanna Kumar.
Students congress
Exercises are also in the pipeline to evaluate the students' progress on environmental issues with the activity material. The NGC, which organised the Students Environment Congress during November 2006, has decided to hold a similar meet this year in July-August and the same will be used to assess the student. The Students Environment Congress at the school-level is scheduled to be held from July 20 to 24 at divisional level from July 25 to 31 and a State-level event from August 6 to 8. With a NGC Students Convention proposed at national-level later, students who make it to the State-level event could be considered for participation, he says.
