KOCHI: Rallies and meetings marked May Day celebrations in the city on Tuesday. Labourers affiliated to various trade unions organised programmes in different parts of the district. The Trade Union Sponsoring Committee took out a mass demonstration in the city in the morning. The rally began from the Rajendra Maidan and concluded at High Court junction. Members of various trade unions who participated in the rally raised slogans against the rise in prices of essential commodities across the country. They also voiced support for the initiatives of the State Government towards improving the life of the workers. Leaders of various trade unions, including M.M. Lawrence and C.K. Manisankar, led the rally. In his inaugural address at the public meeting held after the rally, Mr. Lawrence exhorted the working class to fight against imperialist forces. He urged the Union Government to ensure the rights of lakhs of workers employed in various sectors in the country. Motor transport workers hoisted red flags at their union offices in the city. A May Day meeting was held at Thammanam junction in the evening. Corporation council representatives attended the programme. Speakers at the function called for a concerted effort to protect the rights of the working class. Communist Party of India(Marxist) (CPI-M) workers organised a vehicle rally at Panangad in the morning. They offered floral tributes at the memorial of party leaders at Madavana junction. Hundreds of party workers participated in a march that began from Madavana in the evening. CPI(M) district secretary Gopi Kottamurickal inaugurated a public meeting held at the venue. The Auto Drivers' Charitable Society at Kaloor distributed notebooks to needy students at a function held at Little Flower School at Pottakuzhi. The Mahatma library at Thripunitura organised a meeting in connection with the May Day programmes held in the city.
