Government to support cooperatives in all sectors

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Minister for Cooperation G. Sudhakaran has said that the State Government will back formation of cooperatives in every sector to reduce what he described as a general obsession with realising higher interest on lending.

He was launching a new ambulance service and home-care service introduced by the Thrikkakara Grama Panchayat Cooperative Hospital here on Tuesday.

The Government had recently decided to form a cooperative to provide loans to women from financially backward sections who were getting married. The loans would carry an interest of only four per cent, Mr. Sudhakaran said.

The Government was looking to form a cooperative for fishermen.

It was also working on a proposal to write off the debts owed by poor fishermen to societies and banks, Mr. Sudhakaran said.

Cooperatives were being formed by NRIs, film industry personnel and others. The spirit of cooperation was needed to build a more civilised society, he said.

Those who spread lies about the Government should be ousted from responsible positions in Left party organisations, Mr. Sudhakaran said. He was referring to allegations that capitation fee was being charged in Cooperative Medical College, Kalamassery. He clarified that no capitation fee was being charged at the college.

He also called for expression of opinion on different aspects of social and cultural life. Cooperative ventures in education and health would help put the brakes on the tendency to make these sectors profit-oriented, he said.

With medical treatment becoming increasingly expensive, ventures such as the cooperative hospital at Thrikkakara set good examples, he said.

M.M. Abbas, president, cooperative hospital, welcomed the gathering. K. Babu, MLA, presided.

Thrikkakara grama panchayat president Sabitha Kareem spoke.
