Demonstrations mark May Day

NEW DELHI: A number of demonstrations, meetings and sit-in protests marked May Day here in the Capital on Tuesday.

The Delhi Committee of the Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) took out a march from Ramlila Maidan to Jantar Mantar demanding repeal of the Special Economic Zone Act-2005, regularisation of all contractual labour and end to the contract jobs system.

Addressing the demonstrators at Jantar Manger, IFTU Delhi committee president Animesh Das said, "The working class of Delhi should fight for their basic right of duty hours, minimum wages and statutory facilities.'' The participants also paid tributes to workers' struggle throughout the country and reiterated the need to build a movement to ensure that the workers are given their rights. Members of the Kalawati Hospital Workers' Union held a gate meeting demanding that the Government stop its "anti-people, anti-employee policies". "We are demanding that the Government provide quality health care services free of cost to all, provide necessary medicines, diagnostic and other facilities to the patients and stop the commercialisation of health care. Also we are seeking an end to appointment of people on contract basis and filling up of all vacant post on regular basis,'' said union general secretary V.S. Dahiya. The All-India Central Government Health Scheme Employees' Association also staged a day-long dharna at Shahjahan Road demanding filling up of vacant posts , provision of drinking water at dispensaries and timely confirmation of the employees.
