This Day That Age
In a post-election analysis of the Congress' role, Prime Minister Nehru has expressed the view that Congressmen no longer had the same reputation for honesty and integrity as in the past. Addressing a conference of the PCC Presidents and Secretaries in New Delhi, he said the public had lost, by and large, its respect for the integrity of the average Congressman. "We got so many complaints during elections and at other times about lack of integrity. We hear complaints that Congressmen are hankering after office and indulging in group formations. I do not mind ideological groups which may be there to discuss matters. But when one sees these groups based on personal grounds, the respect of the public fades. Every Congressman wants to stick to office and once that idea creeps in, one of the basic things that gives strength to the Congress disappears."
