Bidar: Globalisation has thrown many new challenges before writers. They should find innovative ways to overcome them and remain relevant, writer and MLC Chandrashekar Kambar said in Bidar on Tuesday. He was speaking at the annual State-level awards ceremony of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy. He said that one of the effects of globalisation was that it promoted the visual media over the printed word. There is an imminent danger of writers losing popularity to the television, Internet and cinema. It is the responsibility of writers to ensure that they do not lose out, he said. The proponents of globalisation are selling the idea of "one world, one culture". This is more dangerous than spreading consumerism, Dr. Kambar said. The greatest danger globalisation posed to developing societies was that it destroyed native culture. "If we get caught in this cycle and forget our heritage and culture, we will never be able to produce literature," he said. Dr. Kambar criticised the media, terming media houses as agents of consumerism. The media has fuelled the growth of a "disposable society". "After getting used to use-and-throw toothbrushes and pens and machines, we have reached a stage where even family relationships have become disposable," he said. Novelist N. Narasimhaiah, storywriter Sudhakar, novelist A.P. Malati, Ghazal writer H.S. Muktayakka and critic Mallepuram G. Venkatesh were presented the honorary award. The other winners are G.P. Basavaraju, R. Sunandamma, Keshavreddy Handral, K.Y. Narayan Swamy, Gangadhar Mudaliyar, C.S. Dwarakanath, Ningappa Mudenoor, Chandrashekar Nangali, Veeranna Rajur, Anand Patil, T.S. Vivekanand, Mangalore Vijay, Taltage Vasanthkumar, M.R. Kamala, Madhav Peraje, Kamala Hemmige, R. Swamy Anand and S. Sugata.
