Samaresh Jung misses free pistol final

NEW DELHI: Samaresh Jung shot a 557 and missed the final on the countback in the free pistol event of the shooting World Cup at Sydney on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old Samaresh had a bad start and a poor finish, but shot very well otherwise to take the 11th spot from among 51 shooters.

He had a series of 91, 94, 94, 95, 93 and 90. Four shooters were tied at 557 for the eighth and last spot in the final and Walter Lapeyre of France made it with a superior last card of 98.

It was not that much of a heart-break for Samaresh, who has had a best finish of fourth in free pistol in the World Cup at Changwon in 2003, as the Olympic quota place went to Boris Kokorev of Russia who won the gold with a 659.1 after an impressive 565 in the qualification series.
