THE KING'S DAUGHTERS: A still from `Saint-cyr' to be screened on Friday

NEW DELHI: To stimulate interest in French cinema among "desi" film buffs, Alliance Francaise de Delhi and the Embassy of France are organising a film festival here at 72 Lodhi Estate beginning this Friday.

Under the banner of "Films Made by Women Directors", the festival will screen eight contemporary French movies up to June 22.

Based on a true story from 17th Century France is "Saint-cyr" that will be screened on Friday. The story revolves round the life of Madame de Maintenon who rises from a humble beginning to become a courtesan at the royal court. With the king's indulgence she opens a special school for girls, seeking to educate young ladies of distinguished parentage with limited financial means.

Director Marion Vernoux's film "Reines d'un jour" is about five people who go through more than their share of ups and downs. To be screened on May 11, the film has a multi-star cast and unfolds in Paris and Vitry.

Set against the backdrop of a small seaside town and its stretch of beach is "Bord de mer" that will be screened on May 18. The film's protagonist is Marie, who is blessed with stunning looks. She works at a processing factory that operates at one end of the beach and has a boyfriend, Paul, who is a grocer in winter and lifeguard in summer.

Director Jeanne Labrune's movie "Cause toujours" has a big star cast and it will be shown on May 25. Released in 2004, the film that takes the form of a fantasy is about mistrust and trust. Winner of four prestigious awards, "La brodeuses" will be shown on June 1. The film revolves round a teenybopper Claire who gets pregnant but cannot decide whether to keep the child or not. So she keeps the news hidden from everyone.

Focusing on the life of a woman lawyer is "Travaux on sait quand ca commence" that will be screened on June 8. Chantal always gains in her profession but in her private life she is a loser. She is the mother of two badly brought up children.

Director Karin Albou film's La petite Jerusalem" dealing with an 18-year-old Laura will be screened on June 15. Laura, who lives in the Parisian suburb of Sarcelles, is torn between her religious education and upbringing and her philosophical studies that offer her another vision of the world.

On June 22 will be screened "Toi et moi" that is about Ariane, who is the editor of the photo romance section of a magazine. The film has been directed by Julie Lopes Curval.
