DHARWAD: Agriculture Business and Export Information Centre, aimed at catering to the needs of farmers and sensitising them on the export business, was inaugurated here on Wednesday. J.H. Kulkarni, Vice-Chancellor of University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, inaugurated the centre. Members of Boards of Regents of the university, agricultural scientists and teachers were present. The centre will cater to the needs of the farmers of 12 districts of north Karnataka in the wake of changed economic policies. It was the former Vice-Chancellor of the university S.A. Patil who had submitted a proposal to the State Government emphasising the need for such a centre for the benefit of farmers. After approving the proposal, the Government had sanctioned the grants for it during the financial year 2006-07. The centre started its operation a few months back and had been involved in several guidance programmes, mainly related to ensure the quality production of select agricultural and horticultural crops. The centre's main function is to guide farmers in post-harvesting activities and business. It will sensitise them on storing, processing and value addition by disseminating information with the help of agricultural scientists and merchants. It plans to facilitate a direct link between merchants engaged in agri-business, processing units, exporters and farmers.
