With eye on polls, Congress tries hard to strengthen base

Staff Correspondent

Three conventions held on same day with the message `gear up for elections'

  • Leaders hit out at coalition Government
  • R.V. Deshpande lists its failures

WHIPPING UP SUPPORT: The former Ministers Jabbarkhan Honnalli and R.V. Deshapande participating in the `Janajagruti Andolana' organised in Hubli as part of the convention of Congress workers on Wednesday.

DHARWAD: Congress conventions were held at three venues in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad on Wednesday.

The main speakers, barring one or two persons, were the same and the message too — "strengthen the party and get ready for election."

The convention of the Dharwad City Unit was held at Kalabhavan in Dharwad in the morning and that of the Hubli City Unit at Town Hall in Hubli in the afternoon. The third convention of Congress workers belonging to the Hubli Rural Legislative Assembly Constituency was held in the evening at the ground adjacent to Hebick Memorial Church.

All these conventions had as main speaker the former Minister R.V. Deshpande who lambasted the coalition Government. He listed the Government's failures and left no chance to criticise the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and other Cabinet members.

The former Minister S.R. Morey and MLC Viranna Mattikatti too criticised the Government at the function at Kalabhavan. The former Minister Jabbarkhan Honnalli hit out at the coalition partners, along with Mr. Deshpande, at the Town Hall in Hubli.

At the ground adjacent to Hebick Memorial Church, it was the former Mayor Anilkumar Patil and others who vented their ire against the coalition. All the speakers utilised some time criticising the Government and concluded with an appeal to strengthen the party.

Mr. Deshpande said that unless Congress workers involved themselves in party-building activity, it was difficult to put up a strong fight against the coalition partners.

Before the Congress workers' conventions began, "Janajagruti Andolana" were held in both Dharwad and Hubli.
