Nuclear deal

The article `This has nothing to do with energy' (May 2) by Siddarth Varadarajan is a brilliant piece of analytic journalism. It confirms that the civilian nuclear deal with the U.S. has ramifications beyond just energy. Recent articles by the same author have mentioned that Indian side is quite strongly negotiating certain amendments. It would do well to keep all the factors mentioned in the article in mind while considering the long-term implications. There is no point in a "strategic partnership" with a country such as the U.S. at the risk of jeopardising relations with our immediate neighbours. One lesson that recent happenings in the world have taught us is: the U.S. cannot be entirely trusted.

S. Sudhir Kumar,

* * *

Some of the U.S. Government's policies in the recent past — the invasion of Iraq, threatening Iran, unwillingness to sign the Kyoto protocol, not taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions despite being the world's biggest polluter — show that Washington's sole interest is its ever-growing needs. It has utter disregard for the sovereignty of other independent states. This should not be forgotten.
