Mandeep shocks Manjit

Kirti Patil

Mon wins 100m

Women's 100m and long jump scrapped at the last minute Bhartender wins men's long jump

Patiala: The elite athletes went through the motions in the Indian Grand Prix at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) here on Wednesday.

Mandeep Kaur clocked a personal best to stun Olympian Manjit Kaur in the women's 400m event as the athletics season got off to a sedate start with minimal participation, forcing two women's events — the 100m and long jump — to be scrapped at the last minute.

Mandeep warmed up for the bigger events scheduled this season by pulling away on the final straight to leave Manjit and Chitra K. Soman fighting for the silver. Mandeep finished in 53.34 seconds while Manjit was home in 53.65. Chitra came third in 54.07.

Poonia pips Seema

Asian Games bronze medallist, Krishna Poonia of Railways, pipped Seema Antil to win the women's discus. Krishna hurled the discus to 58.80m on her third attempt.

Army's Sameer Mon ran a creditable sprint to win the 100m men's in 10.78 seconds, beating BSF's Ajay Kumar (10.82) and Punjab's Lakhvir Singh (11.25).

Best contest
