Puducherry: Members cutting across party lines made a fervent plea during Question Hour in the Assembly on Wednesday that the Government form a Welfare Board for auto drivers. They pointed out that this would enable the drivers and their dependents to draw the benefits of various schemes of the Board. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy earlier told A. Anbalagan (AIADMK) that the Union Territory of Puducherry had a total of 4,635 autos and they were registered with the Transport Department. Replying to a supplementary, the Chief Minister said it was also found that nearly 600 unregistered autos were also plying in the Puducherry region. Mr Rangasamy said he would consult the Labour Minister and take a decision soon.
