RALLYING ROUND: Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University L.B. Venkatrangan flagging off a motorcycle rally by police in Chidambaram on Wednesday.
CUDDALORE: Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University L.B. Venkatrangan flagged off a motorcycle rally taken out by the police to create awareness among the public on the need to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers in Chidambaram on Wednesday. Home Guards and members of the Village Vigilance Committees also took part. Starting from the Annamalai Nagar Post Office, the rally wound its way through the four main streets of the temple town before culminating at the bus stand. Deputy Inspector-General of Police G.K. Vanniabperumal, District Superintendent of Police Pradip Kumar, and Assistant Superintendent of Police K.A. Senthilvelan were present on the occasion. Later, addressing presspersons, Mr. Vanniabperumal said on the direction of Inspector General of Police (North Zone) K. Radhakrishnan the awareness rally was organised. The government order making helmets compulsory would come into force from July 1. According to official statistics, of the 363 fatal road accidents that occurred last year, 87 involved two-wheeler riders. All two-wheeler riders should wear standard helmets, and if they go for sub-standard headgear they would be penalised. He cautioned that those indulging in road rokos or causing obstruction to road traffic would be arrested.
