New Delhi: The 27 per cent reservation proposed by the Centre for the Other Backward Classes in elite educational institutions appears to be genuine and deserves to be upheld, the Tamil Nadu Government said in an application, seeking to implead itself in the quota case before the Supreme Court. The application, filed on Wednesday, said the Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on May 31, 2006 urging the Centre to go ahead with the reservation for the OBCs as it would ensure their advancement and bring them on a par with others in society. On August 4, 2006, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, insisting that the Centre respect the people's mandate by immediately extending the reservation for the OBCs at all levels in all educational institutions under the Government of India without any dilution. The State said it had provided for 69 per cent quota and the apex court had been passing interim orders for every academic year to create additional seats in professional colleges to accommodate students who would have been selected had the 50 per cent reservation, instead of the 69 per cent quota, been followed. The Centre also made a provision in the law to increase the intake so that the number of seats available to the open category would be maintained at the existing level, the application said.
