Lakshit ousted

MUMBAI: Mandeep Singh Gill's endurance and ability to fight till the end helped him ease out top seed Lakshit Sood in a boys' under-16 singles match at Practennis courts. Gill won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) after an intense second round tie spread over two days at the all-India ranking junior tennis 2007 tournament.

Delhi's Sood, ranked seventh in the country, appeared on course in the first set but lost a hard-fought second set in a clash between baseliners. Mandeep led 4-2 in the decider and then lost steam when the top seed took a medical time-out. Sood had forced his way back into the match when bad light at 5-5 forced the match to be completed on Wednesday morning, the tie-breaker resolving the issue.

The two seem to bring out the best in each other, their earlier clash in a Super Series event at Kolkata extending to the three-setter before Mandeep sneaked home.
