CHENNAI: K. Ramalingam, Chairman, Airports Authority of India, on Wednesday inaugurated a transit area constructed at the international airport terminal here. The facility, created in an area of 1200 square metre, would have an executive lounge and a shopping area, Dr. Ramalingam said. He also inaugurated a duty-free shop in the transit lounge for the convenience of passengers. The transit area was expanded at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore, said Airport Director Dinesh Kumar. The international departure terminal was also expanded by another 1,400 square metre for providing better facilities to passengers. A new international arrival block, measuring 9,200 sqm, in two floors with escalators would be ready by this month-end, Mr. Dinesh Kumar said. Other facilities in the international arrival block included four new `slope type' conveyor belts with 15 Customs and 24 Immigration counters. The new facilities were created at a cost of Rs. 17.5 crore. The new facilities were created as part of the endeavour of the Airports Authority of India to provide world-class facilities at the Chennai airport, Dr. Ramalingam said.
