Aswath jumps into lead

Coimbatore: National sub-junior champion R. Aswath of Chennai scored a commanding win over of Syed Anwar Shazuli of ICF to lead the table with nine points from ten rounds in the LA Group Fide-rated open chess tournament organised by the Global Chess Academy at the Jenney Club here on Wednesday.

Calculative game

Earlier in the day, Aswath played a cool and calculative game to defeat joint leader and former Asian under-11 champion V.A.V. Rajesh of Andhra Pradesh in the ninth round.

Rajesh, however, stayed in contention with a comprehensive tenth-round win over Sharma R. Preetham of Southern Railway and shared the berth with International Master R.R. Laxman, who crushed the hopes of local favourite P. Phoobalan.

With only one round to go, the tournament is all set to witness a close finish.

Vinod sparkles

A deadly bowling spell by medium-pacer Vinod Kumar (seven for 19) saw Kenthorai Cricket Club post a 90-run win over Rising Stars Cricket Club in the TNCA-NDCA `C' division league for the Fountain India Rolling Trophy at the LMS grounds, Udhagamandalam on Tuesday.

The scores: Kenthorai CC 134 bt Rising Stars CC 44 (Vinod Kumar seven for 19).
