Varun eliminates Vishwanath

Mysore: Fifth seeded Varun Gopal stunned top seed, Vishwanath Sawadi of High Performance Tennis Centre, Bangalore 9-6 to entered the semifinals of the boys under-16 singles in the NTC-Rotary Mysore Midtown AITA Talent Series junior tennis championship here on Wednesday.

The tie was reduced to best of 17 games, following overnight heavy downpour and tight schedule of ties. Varun stuck to the task, after being 2-3 down at one stage, with a strong display from the back-court, relying heavily on his forehand winners. He capitalised on his rival's unforced errors to wrap up the tie.

Varun next takes on wildcard, Rohit Srinath, who upset the seventh seed G.L. Karthik 9-4. Second seed C.M. Kiran of Mysore reached the semifinals with a 9-5 win over Asaad Jaffer of Bangalore. He takes on the third seed Vishnu K. Jinan, who got the better of Pyara Singh 9-6.

All the fancied players made the girls under-16 singles quarterfinals and boys under-14 semifinals.

In the boys under-12 singles State-ranking event, unseeded Suraj R. Prabodh shocked the second seeded M.S. Rakshit 9-4.

The results: Boys under-16 singles: Quarterfinals: Varun Gopal (Kar) bt Vishwanath Sawadi (Kar) 9-6; C.M. Kiran (Kar) bt Asaad Jaffer (Kar) 9-5; Rohit Srinath (Kar) bt G.L. Karthik (Kar) 9-4; Vishnu K Jinan (Kar) bt Pyara Singh (Kar) 9-6.

Boys under-16 doubles: Semifinals: C.M. Kiran & Varun Gopal (Kar) bt Anand George & Prithish Kishore (Ker) 9-0; Vishwanath Sawadi & Rishi Debrai (Kar) bt Suren Kumar & Surjit Singh 9-3.

Boys under-14 singles: Quarterfinals: S. Raghavendra (Kar) bt Siddarth Reddy (TN) 9-5; Kashyap Ashok (Kar) bt Subhash Koushik (TN) 9-4; Anirudh Puranic (Kar) bt D. Siddarth (Kar) 9-4; K. Venkatesh (TN) bt J.S. Arun Raj (TN) 9-5.
