University to waive attendance norms

CHENNAI: The Syndicate of Anna University has resolved to waive attendance norms of certain students for taking the 2006-07 university examinations.

A recent Syndicate meeting decided to relax attendance rules, based on representations by students, who cited health grounds such as chickenpox and chikungunya. The Syndicate took the decision based on the merit of the cases. — Special Correspondent

Palar: JMK plea to Andhra Pradesh

CHENNAI: The Jananayaga Munnetra Kazhagam (JMK) has appealed to the Andhra Pradesh Government to desist from going ahead with the construction of a check dam across the Palar.

In resolutions passed at its general council meeting here on Wednesday, the JMK sought a separate budget for farmers. Party president S. Jagatratchakan demanded more industries in villages, 33 per cent quota for women, inter-linking of rivers in the South and end to Foreign Direct Investment in the newspaper industry. It urged the Centre to take steps to protect Tamil Nadu fishermen.

The party will hold a State-level meet at Villupuram in December and a women's wing conference on May 10 at Salem. — Special Correspondent

Two `signal cartridges' found

RAMANATHAPURAM: The police on Wednesday found two suspected signal cartridges on the Kurusadai Island, one of the 21 islands of the Gulf of Mannar. Acting on information given by Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park officials, a team consisting of Coastal Security Group and Forest Department reached the island, which is nearly 6 km from the Pamban, by boat and inspected the objects. They were handed over to the Pamban police.

The police release said the green-coloured objects were 1-foot long and 4.5 cm in diameter and covered with plastic caps. — Staff Reporter

Six killed in accident

VANIYAMBADI: Six persons, four of them women, died when a tempo truck rammed a container lorry near Vaniyambadi in Vellore district early on Wednesday. While Yogesh (28), Venkatesh (39) and Sakkamma (35) died on the spot, Gangamma (40), Chickamma (65) and Sujiah (40) died at the Vaniyambadi Government Hospital. The condition of 10 more passengers, who were shifted to a private hospital in Bangalore, was stated to be serious. The police said the passengers, who belonged to Tumkur in Karnataka, were returning after pilgrimage to Tirupati and Kancheepuram. The accident occurred when the tempo driver lost control. While the tempo driver was arrested, the lorry driver is absconding. — Staff Reporter

Elephant killed, tusks removed

ERODE: A 20-year-old male elephant was found dead, with its head chopped off, in the Thalawady forest on Tuesday morning.

According to Forest officials, the animal died of electric shock when it came in contact with a fence around a land at Idupapuram village near Malkuttipuram. The land was barren and the owner, a farmer, was not residing there. It is suspected that poachers erected the fence to trap the animal. — Staff Reporter

ERODE: While inaugurating a new KMS TVS Showroom at Bhavani on Monday, the General Manager (Sales) of TVS group of Companies R. Sankaran said during 2007-2008, the company had decided to produce 18 lakh two-wheelers, as against 15 lakh produced in 2006-2007.

He said the volume of business by TVS during the last year was Rs 4,000 crore and this would be increased during the current year.

He said TVS was dominating in the two-wheeler market and at present 42 per cent of the vehicles on the roads were TVS products, which was likely to go up to 50 per cent within a year.

The Area Manager G. Ramesh inaugurated the Automated Service Shop, the Assistant General Manager, State Bank of India, N. Sivagurunathan inaugurated the Spare parts Section, the Chairman of KMS TVS show room S. Sellamuthu, Proprietrix of KMS Bus Transport Ms P. Lakshmiprabha spoke.

Road blockade

Nagapattinam: Forty persons were arrested by police on Wednesday when they resorted to a road roko agitation in front of the Revenue Divisional Office at Mayiladuturai, urging the Government to sanction solatium for the family of one Thiagarajan (45) who was murdered on Tuesday night.

Police said that Thiagarajan, was earlier AIADMK secretary of the Keezhavayalur village, near Aduthurai in Thanjavur district. Mohan, a life convict serving his sentence in Tiruchi central prison who came on parole to his native village Vadamattam four days ago, led a gang and allegedly attacked Thiagarajan with deadly weapons at Vadamattam village and escaped. The police released the arrested persons in the evening.

Youth killed

PUDUKOTTAI: P. Saravanan (32) of Karuviapatti near Vallathurai in Sivagangai district was gored to death by a bull and six others injured during a `jallikattu' at Sri Ariyanayaki temple at K. Pudhupatti near Ponnamaravathy on Wednesday. Saravanan while trying to tame a bull, was seriously injured. He was rushed to the Aranthangi GH, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 75.77 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 1,245 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,000 cusecs. — Special Correspondent

3 die in accident

RAMANATHAPURAM : Three persons were killed on the spot at Thoruvalur near here on Wednesday.

Sources said a private bus, which was coming from Nainarkoil to Ramanathapuram, hit a motorcycle killing its occupants Lakshmanan (55), Pondi (20) of Rottikaratheru and Rathinam (45) of Akkaramesi.

Two pilgrims killed

THENI : Two pilgrims were killed on the spot and two others injured when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus going to Tiruchi from Cumbum ran over them at Upparpatti bypass near here on Wednesday.

R. Gomathi alias Parvathi Ammal (65) and R. Pugazhendiran (31) of Anaipatti in Uthamapalayam taluk were killed. A. Kousalya (34) and M. Sudha (33) were admitted to Theni Government Medical College Hospital at Andipatti. Bus driver Ananthappan was arrested.

They were walking towards Veerapandi to have a darshan of Goddess Sri Gowmariamman.

Lottery tickets seized

Tuticorin: The police on Tuesday seized 800 lottery tickets from different parts of the district and arrested four persons. While S. Jeyaraj (36), R. Ramamoorthy (39) and P. Sankar (41) were taken into custody with 796 tickets at Ettayapuram, M. Nagarajan (43) was arrested from Kovilpatti.

They were remanded to judicial custody.

Elected

MADURAI: A. Purushothaman has been unanimously elected governor of Rotary District 3000 of Rotary International for 2009-2010. According to a press release, Rotary District 3000 comprises Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Tiruchi, Perambalur, Karur and Pudukkottai revenue districts. Mr. Purushothaman, who was the past president of Rotary Club of Madurai West, is an executive member of the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

New Lions governor

MADURAI: T. Pandiarajan has been elected governor of Lions Club International District 324 B3 for 2007-08 at a district convention held recently. R.K. Thangaraj was elected vice-district governor.

According to a press release, the district governor-elect has nominated S. Murali as cabinet secretary, Rm. Ramu cabinet treasurer, P. Radha Krishnan joint secretary, C. Gnanasekar joint treasurer, M. Nagasundaram additional cabinet secretary and G. Hare Krishnan additional cabinet treasurer.

Lions Club International District 324 B3 comprises Madurai, Sivaganga, Dindigul and Theni revenue districts.
