No change in number of constituencies, says Anbazhagan

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: There will be no change in the total number of Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies in the State as per the draft proposal published by the Delimitation Commission, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan informed the Assembly on Wednesday.

The State will continue to have 39 parliamentary and 234 assembly constituencies. However, the number of Assembly constituencies reserved for Scheduled Castes had been increased from 42 to 44 while the total constituencies reserved for Scheduled Tribes had been reduced to 2 from 3.

The Minister said the Commission would hold public sittings in Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi and Chennai from May 17 to 22 for considering objections and suggestions received from political parties and members of the public.

The Minister said preparation of photo electoral rolls was almost complete in the State. The photos of seven per cent of the electorate remained to be included in the rolls.
