NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought clarifications from the State Government on an order allegedly issued by the Lieutenant-Governor directing the Government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Development Authority to seek permission from him before taking up demolitions in urbanised villages of the Capital. A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice M. K. Sharma and Justice Rekha Sharma sought clarifications from the Government when one of the court commissioners informed it that the Lieutenant-Governor's Office had issued the order on April 26. Observing that the order by the L-G amounted to a stay on the orders passed by the Court from time to time in the matter of demolition of unauthorised constructions, the Bench asked the Govt. to make its stand clear on May 9. The Bench passed the direction while hearing public interest litigation by a non-government organisation, Kalyan Sanstha Social Welfare Association, seeking demolition of unauthorised constructions in the city. To oversee demolition of illegal constructions here, the High Court has set up a parallel mechanism to the MCD, putting in place a monitoring committee and appointing court commissioners. The court commissioners inspect all 12 zones of the local body on a regular basis to take stock of unauthorised constructions and then submit reports to the Court on action taken by the civic body.
