NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia will soon set up a Centre for Northeast Studies on its campus. The university's Executive Council and Academic Council have approved the blueprint for the new centre that will come up within the next 18 months, said Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan. "The idea behind setting up this centre is that the Northeast is an important and sensitive area. There are so many important States there and we must make an attempt to study the contemporary developments as well as the culture, history and society of these States. Perhaps this will be the only such centre in the country," added Prof. Hasan. The university is expecting to get the funds for infrastructure and teaching positions from the University Grants Commission by September this year. The Centre for Northeast Studies primarily will be for research purposes. As of now, Jamia has about 25 different centres. The university is also working towards setting up a new medical centre for students, teachers and administration. The King Abdul Aziz Medical Centre will be constructed with a grant of Rs. 2.25 crore provided by Saudi Arabia. The fund will be handed over to Jamia in four phases according to the progress of the work. The state-of-the-art health centre is expected to be ready in a year or so, said Prof. Hasan.
