TIRUNELVELI: The Tirunelveli Corporation's Rs. 3.78-crore KTC Nagar Drinking Water Project is at present not quenching the thirst of many owing to a burst in the main pipeline near KTC Nagar, residents allege.

Water gushing out from the pipe has formed a pool during the past few weeks. The areas worst hit by water scarcity are V.M. Chathram, Housing Board Colony and Arockiyanathapuram.

When residents complained about inadequate supply of water, the Corporation officials informed that the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage (TWAD) Board, is yet to hand over the scheme to the civic body. But the executing agency told the Corporation that the pool was the outcome of water spilling out of a nearby well and not the pipeline.

A Corporation official said that the TWAD Board had been asked to look into the issue and the Corporation would not take over the scheme unless the problem was rectified.

The project was launched by Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin in June last. The then Minister for Industries, Nainar Nagendran, had laid the foundation stone on February 13, 2005.

The Corporation entrusted the execution of the project to the TWAD Board.

Three wells with a diameter of 4.5 metre each near Thirumalaikozhunthupuram were dug and water was pumped using a 35-HP motor to a ground-level water tank on the Tamirabarani riverbed. It had a capacity of two lakh litre.

The water would be pumped from there to three overhead tanks at KTC Nagar (5 lakh litre), V.M. Chathram (3 lakh litre) and Arockiyanathapuram (1 lakh litre).
