Bheemappa tipped to be KPSC chief

BANGALORE: BESCOM Managing Director Gonal Bheemappa is tipped to become chairman of KPSC.

According to sources, Mr. Bheemappa's appointment has been cleared by the Government and a notification is expected anytime. — Special Correspondent

Yediyurappa rebuts criticism

BANGALORE: Beneficiaries of the welfare schemes announced in 2007-08 budget will be able to profit from them by the end of this month. To this end, the State Government will start department-level meetings with respective secretaries from Thursday.

Announcing this at a function organised by the Bangalore Development Authority here on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said the ban on arrack would commence from July 1. On the criticism from the Opposition that proposals made in the last year's budget had not been being fully implemented, Mr. Yediyurappa said about 95 per cent of the proposals had been implemented. — Staff Reporter

`BJP not against internal quota'

BANGALORE: BJP is not against issuing a notification providing an internal quota in respect of category II A of OBCs in the State, Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy has said.

He told presspersons on Wednesday that the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda was wrongly informed about the BJP's stand on the internal quota.

Bandh in Nippani

Belgaum: The border town of Nippani observed a near-total bandh in protest against the move of the Delimitation Commission to merge Nippani Assembly segment with Chikkodi and Sadalga Assembly constituencies on Wednesday.

Farmer ends life

BIJAPUR: Unable to come out of the debt trap, a grape farmer committed suicide at Basanal village in Indi taluk on Tuesday.

The police gave his name as Somaningappa Kallappa Khajani (42). He had developed a vineyard after taking Rs. 2 lakh as loan from a commercial bank, but he suffered losses. Disgusted by this, according to police, he resorted to the extreme step. — Staff Correspondent

Prohibitory order

Madikeri: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav, has promulgated prohibitory orders in and around 200 m. limits of Government Junior College here to ensure smooth conduct of the Common Entrance Test that is scheduled to be held on May 9. The ban orders would be in force from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., a release said here on Wednesday. Typewriting and xerox copy centres around the centre will remain closed. — Staff Correspondent

SP takes charge

Madikeri: Trilok Chandra K.V. assumed charge as Superintendent of Police, Kodagu district, here on Wednesday. He was handed over charge by outgoing SP Ramachandra Rao. Dr. Chandra, who belongs to the 2003 IPS batch, was earlier ASP in Gulbarga. — Staff Correspondent

Tight security

CHIKMAGALUR: Members of Karnataka Hindu Janajagruti Samiti were prevented by the authorities from conducting a pooja at Dattatreya Peeta in Bababudangiri on Tuesday. There was tight security in the area. Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur district and senior police officers told them that they had not received any instructions regarding changes in pooja practices at the peeta. .

Sentenced

BANGALORE: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)-designated court on Monday convicted and sentenced a State Bank of Mysore official to two years imprisonment for entering into a criminal conspiracy and cheating the bank of Rs. 18.83 lakh. The court also fined C.V. Krishna Murthy Rs. 10,000 for cheating the bank when he was the manager of the Pattadur branch in Chikmagalur in 1994. Mr. Murthy is Assistant Manager at the bank's Harihar branch in Davangere district. — Staff Reporter

Minister visits BEL

Bangalore: On a two-day visit to Bangalore, Sweden's Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bidt on Wednesday said there were many areas where Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), with its wide range of products from radars to electronic voting machines, and Swedish companies, could explore new business avenues. During the visit, BEL's Chairman and Managing Director V.V.R. Sastry made a presentation on the company's capabilities in defence and civilian areas. — Special Correspondent

Meeting

BANGALORE: The Directorate of Employment and Training held a technical and academic meeting on the State Apprenticeship Council and State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT) under the chairmanship of the Minister for Labour Iqbal Ansari here on Wednesday. The meeting discussed academic issues such as getting the training manual of SCVT approved and obtaining clearance for conducting SCVT examination of various trades from the Government. — Staff Reporter
