SC, ST students to be taught lessons on human rights

BHUBANESWAR: In an attempt to strengthen the voice against human rights violations among the backward sections of society, students belonging to Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste will be taught lessons on human rights issues from the coming academic session. The education on human rights issue will be introduced in 50 ST and SC residential schools of the State.

A five-day training programme was organised here where 54 teachers from these schools took part and got acquainted with different dimensions of the subject.

Addressing the concluding day of training programme, State Minister of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Caste Development, Minority and Backward Classes Welfare Chaitanya Prasad Majhi described it an appreciate move.

Book prepared

"If it turns out to be successful, the programme will be replicated in other schools also." A 127-page book has been prepared by a panel comprising of well-known litterateur, linguist and anthropologist keeping in view of tribal lifestyle. The book contains several illustrative short stories that deal with issues such superstitions, corporal punishments and examples of human rights violations, unity in diversity, democracy and evolution of humanity. However, the students will not have to sit in for examination. At present Tamil Nadu is conducting a pilot programme on human rights education.

In Orissa, the programme will be targeting 2000 students who belong to marginalised section of the State's population. The teachers, who have got the training, will meet in a summer camp to share their experience of imparting human rights education and what changes they have noticed in school ambience and students' attitude.
