Chief Minister makes surprise check

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Wednesday made a surprise inspection in some departments in the North and Main blocks of the Secretariat to check attendance in offices. The Chief Minister undertook the inspection in view of complaints that the employees were not seen in their seats during office hours and were leaving offices early. — Special Correspondent

Minister leads delegation to Delhi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A delegation led by Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran left for Delhi from here on Wednesday to seek assistance from the Centre to keep down prices in the State. The delegation, which will meet Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and other Ministers, will seek higher allocation of wheat, rice and kerosene to the State for public distribution. — Special Correspondent

Power through underground cables

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government is planning to make power distribution in the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode through underground cables to make it more safe. This was announced by Minister for Electricity A.K. Balan while inaugurating Electricity Safety Week under the aegis of the Electrical Inspectorate here on Wednesday.

Fake currency: probe intensified

KASARAGOD. The district police is learnt to be collecting details of Khadar Abdul Majeed, a native of Uppala in the district, who was arrested in Kozhikode recently with fake Indian currency worth Rs.20 lakh printed outside the country. According to sources, the police conducted investigation on Mr. Majeed at his native village. The police were also investigating whether he had worked for fake note rackets earlier.

Abhaya case: CBI gets time

Kochi: The Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Wednesday granted time to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) till May 7 to file a statement on the progress of the investigation into the allegation of tampering with the chemical examination report in the Sister Abhaya death case. The CBI petition had sought more time to file the statement, as the investigation officer was away. The court, on November 29, 2006, had handed over an anonymous letter to the CBI, which alleged that the chemical examination report had been tampered. It had also directed the CBI to investigate the allegations. — Staff Reporter

KPCC panel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A committee has been set up with Thennala Balakrishna Pillai as chairman by KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala to draw up the programme for the year-long celebrations which the party proposes to organise in connection with the 150th anniversary of the first freedom struggle. Mullappally Ramachandran is the vice-chairman, K. Mohan Kumar is the general convener and E. Mohammed Kunhi, the treasurer. — Special Correspondent

Suspension revoked

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The suspension of T. Saratchandra Prasad from the Congress has been revoked, according to an announcement here on Wednesday from the KPCC general secretary K.C. Rajan. He had been placed under suspension over issues connected with the last general elections. — Special Correspondent

Acid leaks as tanker falls into stream

KOLLAM: A tanker lorry transporting acid fell more than 70 ft into a mountain stream at 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday at Aryankavu on the Kollam-Thirumangalam National Highway. The police said the driver lost control when one of the front tyres of the lorry was punctured. Three persons in the lorry, including the driver, were seriously injured. In the impact of the fall, the valve of the tank got dismantled and acid started leaking into the stream. The stream feeds the Thenmala dam. The police sounded a warning for those living on banks of the stream not to use the water until further information. — Staff Reporter

New secretary for Orthodox Church

KOTTAYAM: George Joseph is the new secretary of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Mr. Joseph, who belongs to St. George's Church, Angadickal, under the Thumpamon Diocese, was declared elected after he won by a margin of two votes against his rival, Biju Oommen. Catholicos Baselius Mar Thoma Didimos I chaired the meeting. — Staff Reporter

New Archbishop

PATHANAMTHITTA: Thomas Mar Coorilos, former Muvattupuzha Bishop of the Malankara Catholic Church, was installed the second Metropolitan Archbishop of Thiruvalla at a ceremony held at St. John's Cathedral in Thiruvalla on Wednesday. Major Archbishop Baselios Cleemis Catholicos was the principal celebrant of the installation ceremony.

Painting award

KANNUR: Aishwarya Ganesh of Ursuline Senior Secondary School here has been conferred the Prince of Painting Award 2007 of the Raja Ravi Varma Trust for upper-primary school students.

The award was presented the other day at the Kilimanoor palace on the 159th birth anniversary of Ravi Varma.

The selection was made through a painting competition for select students from all districts in the State.
