Guided development of the complex mooted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Cabinet on Wednesday approved a master plan for development of the Sabarimala temple complex.

The plan, prepared by IL and FS Ecosmart Limited, proposes guided development of the complex and surrounding region in a complementary and eco-friendly manner with a 50-year perspective. It also proposes a disaster management strategy to minimise future disasters and their impacts at the pilgrim centre.

The re-development of the temple envisages phased removal of commercial units and building of a new Appam Aravana complex. Building of a queue complex at the Marakootam-Sannidhanam stretch, restrictions on parking at Pampa, proper waster management at all Thavalams, aeration of the Bhasmakulam and construction of a new administrative building are among the other proposals. Formation of an outer temple complex wall and `nada pandal' are proposed for completion by 2013.

The plan also proposes setting up of base and transit camps, improved transportation facilities including ropeways, improvement of existing roads, construction of new roads, augmentation of water supply and sanitation facilities and integration of projects identified under the Pampa Action Plan.

Besides, pilgrim amenities and water supply facilities will be built at a large number of locations in Pathanamthitta and neighbouring districts. Base camps are proposed at 19 places in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts. Transit conglomerates are planned in Thrissur and districts south of Thrissur.

Facilities are proposed to be augmented at many temples on the way to Sabarimala and nearby locations. A large number of roads are to be improved along with construction of several new roads. Emergency access ways and information gateways for pilgrims are to be provided at base camps besides basic amenities and transport and health services.
