Committee visits Udyogamandal unit

KOCHI: The Local Area Environment Monitoring Committee which visited the Udyogamandal division of Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) on Wednesday directed the fertilizer company to rectify its pH correction system and to shut the drain through which effluents were being discharged until the correction was carried out.

The committee visited the Udyogamandal unit in the wake of an order issued on Saturday last by the State Pollution Control Board (PCB) to shut down the unit.

The visit by the committee was taken up to ascertain the facts, said G. Madhu, head of the committee and Professor at the Department of Fire and Safety Engineering, Cochin University of Science and Technology.

The PCB issued the closure notice after the cause of a fish kill in downstream Periyar was attributed to polluting discharge from the Udyogamandal unit. The PCB had concluded that big variation in pH levels was one of the reasons for the fish kill.
